What 120 BPM is for

Sunset sets, closing sets, and anything that has to work on headphones as well as on a floor. 120 is where the long reverb tails get the most room of any usable techno tempo — which is why the cinematic end of the style lives here and almost nothing peak-time does.

The arithmetic

At 120 BPM a beat lasts 500 ms and a four-beat bar lasts 2.00 seconds. From that, everything else follows:

Builds. 32 bars = 1:04. 64 bars = 2:08. 128 bars = 4:16. The choice of build length is effectively a choice of genre.

The arpeggio grid. A sixteenth note lands every 125 ms. Below about 90 ms a sequence stops reading as separate notes and becomes a timbre; above about 160 ms it stops fusing into one texture and becomes a riff.

Delay in time. A dotted eighth is 375 ms — the setting that produces a cross-rhythm against straight sixteenths rather than doubling them. A quarter-note delay is 500 ms.

Track length. A 6-minute record at this tempo is 180 bars; an 8-minute one is 240 bars. Arrangements are written in multiples of 8 and 16, so those are the numbers a producer is actually counting.

One step either way

Below 120 the pulse starts to drag for a standing crowd. Above 124 the space between hits closes and the record stops feeling patient.
