mix is the
real one.

These labels are not marketing. Each describes a specific structural decision, and in this genre one of them is the actual record.

What each label means

Extended mix. Six to ten minutes, with the full build intact and long beat-only sections at both ends so a DJ can mix in and out. This is normally the version the producer actually wrote.

Radio edit. Two and a half to three and a half minutes. The intro is cut to eight bars, the build is removed, and the hook arrives inside thirty seconds. Built for a context where nobody is going to wait.

Club mix. Similar length to the extended version, but arranged for a floor rather than a listener — more repetition, less narrative, usually a bigger drum mix.

Original mix. Means whatever the artist considers the primary version, which in dance music is usually the long one.

Dub / dub mix. The vocal removed or buried, leaving the instrumental. Useful to a DJ because it can sit under another record’s vocal.

Why the edit breaks this genre specifically

Because in melodic techno the build is the content. At 124 BPM a 128-bar approach runs four minutes and eight seconds — longer than an entire radio edit. Remove it and the drop has nothing to resolve; what is left is the loudest sixty seconds of a record whose point was the previous four minutes. In a genre where the hook is the first eight bars, the edit loses nothing. Here it loses everything.

Where to find the long versions

Search extended mix explicitly — streaming playlists default to the shorter cut. Melodic techno extended mix and techno 124 BPM extended both surface long-form material that algorithmic playlists tend to skip past.

Heard, not read

Everything above is description. The player at the top of this page is the thing itself — BALIMORE, written, produced and mixed by Steven Ran Cohen, free and with no sign-up. If the explanation was useful, four minutes of the music will be more so.

Questions people actually ask

What does extended mix mean?

A six to ten minute version of a track with the full build intact and long beat-only sections at the start and end so DJs can mix in and out. In dance music it is usually the version the producer actually wrote.

What is the difference between extended mix and radio edit?

The radio edit is cut to roughly two and a half to three and a half minutes with the intro shortened to eight bars and the long build removed, so the hook arrives within thirty seconds.

Why are melodic techno tracks so long?

Because the 64 to 128 bar build is the content, not the preamble. At 124 BPM a 128-bar approach lasts four minutes and eight seconds — longer than a whole radio edit.

What is a dub mix?

A version with the vocal removed or buried, leaving the instrumental. DJs use it so another record's vocal can sit on top.
