Why everything slows down outdoors
Open air has no walls to reflect the low end, so a heavy sub simply disappears into the sky. What carries outside is the mid-range — congas, shakers, a filtered bassline, a pad with body. Those elements need space to be heard separately, and space is what a slower tempo gives you.
At 122 BPM you can place three or four percussion hits between beats and still hear each one. At 140 they smear into texture.
Warm, not big
Sunset is a transitional hour: people are standing, talking, moving loosely rather than dancing hard. Music that demands a response gets ignored. Music that sets a temperature gets adopted. The Afro and Latin material works here because it is rhythmically busy but emotionally relaxed — there is a lot happening, and none of it is urgent.
Where it goes next
A sunset set is an opening, not a destination. It should end slightly faster and slightly darker than it started, so whatever follows has somewhere to go.
