Three concrete differences

Sound sources. Organic house is built on recorded material — hand percussion, flutes, strings, field recordings, acoustic guitar. Melodic techno is built on synthesis. You can hear this in the attack: a struck or plucked acoustic sound has an irregular transient, a synth does not.

What the kick is doing. In organic house the kick is soft, short and often buried — it keeps time without carrying the record. In melodic techno the kick is the low end, long and forward. Listen to eight bars of intro and the difference is immediate.

Tempo band. Organic house sits at 110 to 122, melodic techno at 120 to 132. They meet around 120 to 122, which is exactly where the confusion happens and where a lot of genuinely hybrid records live.

Why they get played together

Because they serve the same function in a night. Organic house is the sunset and the early hours; melodic techno takes over as the room fills. A good set moves from one to the other without a visible seam, which is also why playlists mix them freely and listeners end up unable to tell which they actually prefer.

What to search for each

For the acoustic end: organic house, downtempo organic house set, ethnic house 118 BPM. For the synthetic end: melodic techno 124 BPM, deep melodic techno mix.

Questions people actually ask

What is organic house?

A slow, atmospheric house style around 110 to 122 BPM built largely on recorded acoustic material — hand percussion, flutes, strings, field recordings — with a soft kick that keeps time rather than carrying the track.

What is the difference between organic house and melodic techno?

Organic house uses acoustic sound sources, a soft buried kick and tempos of 110 to 122 BPM. Melodic techno uses synthesis, a long forward kick that carries the low end, and tempos of 120 to 132.

Why are they played in the same sets?

Because they cover different parts of the same night. Organic house works at sunset and in the early hours; melodic techno takes over as energy rises, and the two overlap around 120 BPM.

Is Afro house the same as organic house?

They share hand percussion and tempo range but Afro house is groove-led and more rhythmically dense, while organic house is texture-led and sparser.
