What you can hear

Swing. House swings — the offbeat hats and bass notes land slightly late, which is the inheritance from disco and funk. Techno is straight: everything on the grid. This is the single most reliable test, and it works within two bars.

Where the groove lives. In house, the kick keeps time and the bassline and hats create the movement. In techno, the kick is the movement — longer, louder, more forward in the mix, often with no separate bassline at all.

Harmonic palette. House borrows from soul, gospel and jazz: seventh chords, major keys, real vocals singing words. Techno is minor, often has no chords at all, and treats voices as material.

Tempo. House 118 to 126, techno 125 to 150. They overlap, which is why tempo alone never settles it.

The styles that blur the line

Tech house is house groove with techno sound design — swung, but with techno’s drums and minimal harmony. Melodic techno is techno drums with progressive-house arrangement. Afro and Latin techno puts swung hand percussion over a techno kick. All three exist precisely because the border is productive.

The two-second test

Listen to the hats. Evenly spaced and mechanical: techno. Slightly late and breathing: house. It is right far more often than any argument about cities.

Everything above is description. The player at the top of this page is the thing itself — BALIMORE, written, produced and mixed by Steven Ran Cohen, free and with no sign-up. If the explanation was useful, four minutes of the music will be more so.

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between techno and house?

House swings — offbeat hats and bass land slightly late — and puts the groove in the bassline while the kick keeps time. Techno is straight on the grid and the kick itself carries the groove. House leans on major-key, soul-derived harmony and real vocals; techno is minor or has no harmony at all.

Is techno faster than house?

Usually. House runs roughly 118 to 126 BPM and techno 125 to 150, but they overlap, so tempo alone does not settle it.

What is tech house?

House groove with techno sound design: the swung rhythm of house, the drum palette and minimal harmony of techno.

How can I tell them apart quickly?

Listen to the hi-hats for two bars. Mechanically even means techno; slightly late and breathing means house.
