Melodic techno

house.

These two get confused constantly, and for a good reason — they inherited the same arrangement. Here is where they actually part company.

What they share

One thing, and it is the big one: the arrangement. Both build over 64 to 128 bars, adding one element every eight, and both treat the approach as more important than the payoff. If a record takes three minutes to get going, that habit came from progressive house.

Where they split

Kick weight. Progressive house uses a shorter, softer kick that leaves room for a bassline to do the work. Melodic techno uses a longer, heavier kick that is the low end. Listen to the first eight bars with no other elements and you can tell them apart immediately.

Groove. Progressive house swings and uses offbeat bass. Melodic techno is straight — everything on the grid, the hats locked, the bass on the beat rather than between them.

Harmonic palette. Progressive house will happily sit in a major key and resolve warmly. Melodic techno is minor nearly without exception, and often declines to resolve at all.

Where the drop lands. Progressive house drops into a groove — the bass returns and you dance. Melodic techno drops into a texture — a filter opens and you feel released. Different physical response.

The honest answer about borderline records

A large amount of what gets called melodic techno is a hybrid, and arguing about the label is less useful than knowing what you are hearing. If the bass jumps octaves and the kick is heavy, you are in the hybrid zone — which is, not coincidentally, where most of the biggest records of the last few years have lived.

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between melodic techno and progressive house?

Both use long 64 to 128 bar builds. Melodic techno has a heavier, longer kick that carries the low end, a straight on-grid groove and a minor-key palette; progressive house has a softer kick with a separate bassline, swung offbeat groove and will resolve in a major key.

Is melodic techno faster than progressive house?

Slightly, and they overlap. Melodic techno runs 120 to 132 BPM, progressive house roughly 118 to 126.

Why do so many tracks sound like both?

Because most of the current wave is deliberately a hybrid — progressive-house arrangement on techno drums. The label matters less than recognising the two halves.

Which came first?

Progressive house, by well over a decade. Melodic techno inherited its arrangement logic and applied it to a heavier drum palette.
