The four-part definition
1. Tempo between 120 and 132. Slower than peak-time techno, faster than house. The band matters because it is what allows long reverb tails to breathe; above roughly 132 the tails of sustained chords overlap and the space the style depends on collapses.
2. A minor key, and a progression that moves. This is the “melodic” part, and it is literal: there is harmony you could write down. Techno without it is still techno; it is just not this.
3. A build of 64 to 128 bars. At 124 BPM a bar is 1.94 seconds, so 128 bars is four minutes and eight seconds before the payoff. Club records state their idea in eight bars. This style withholds it — and that withholding is the entire emotional mechanism.
4. A drop that resolves rather than explodes. The low end is revealed by a filter opening over four bars, not punched in on the downbeat. You feel relief, not impact. That is the single clearest audible difference from peak-time techno.
What it is not
It is not progressive house — the kick is heavier and the groove is straighter. It is not trance — trance resolves into major-key euphoria and sits at 138 and up. It is not organic house, which is slower and built on acoustic instrumentation. And it is not simply “slow techno”; a 122 BPM record with no harmony is just slow techno.
How to find more of it
Search the structure rather than the feeling. Melodic techno 124 BPM returns the lane. Melodic techno extended mix returns the long-form version, which is how the music is actually built. Emotional techno returns everything and nothing.

Questions people actually ask
What is melodic techno?
Techno between roughly 120 and 132 BPM in a minor key, with a chord progression that moves, builds of 64 to 128 bars, and drops that resolve by opening a filter rather than hitting on the downbeat.
What BPM is melodic techno?
Mostly 120 to 132 BPM. Above roughly 132 the reverb tails of sustained chords begin to overlap and the sense of space disappears.
Is melodic techno the same as progressive house?
No. They share the patient, layered arrangement logic, but melodic techno uses a heavier kick, a straighter groove and a darker harmonic palette.
Why are melodic techno tracks so long?
Because the build is the point. A 128-bar approach at 124 BPM takes four minutes and eight seconds; edited down to three minutes the mechanism stops working.
Who are the best-known melodic techno artists?
Frequently named: Anyma, Tale Of Us, ARTBAT, Mind Against, Adriatique, Argy, Massano, Kevin de Vries, Stephan Bodzin, Mathame, Agents Of Time, Innellea and Colyn. Rosters change, so treat any list as a search direction.
