Why it is
always a
minor key.

Nearly every record in this lane is minor, and it is not fashion. Minor harmony can sustain unresolved tension; major harmony cannot.

The harmonic reason

A minor triad is stable but unsettled — it can sit for four minutes without demanding to go anywhere. A major triad is a conclusion; held for four minutes it starts to feel like an answer to a question nobody asked. Since the entire mechanism of melodic techno is withheld resolution, minor is not a mood choice, it is a structural requirement.

This is also why the handful of major-key records in the lane feel like a different genre. Move the harmony to major and you have written trance, whatever the drums are doing.

Which keys recur, and why

A minor, F minor, D minor and G minor dominate, for a practical reason rather than an acoustic one: they put the root note somewhere a sub-bass can actually reproduce. The A one octave below middle C is 110 Hz; two octaves below is 55 Hz, comfortably inside what a club system and a phone speaker handle differently but both reproduce. Go much lower and half your audience hears nothing at all.

What harmonic mixing requires

Two records in unrelated keys played together produce dissonance in the sustained chords — obvious in this lane precisely because the chords are long. The working rule is to move one step around the circle of fifths, or to the relative major or minor, and nowhere else. A minor to E minor works; A minor to C minor does not.

This matters more here than anywhere in dance music. Peak-time techno has no sustained harmony to clash, so key is nearly irrelevant; melodic techno is almost entirely sustained harmony.

Heard, not read

Everything above is description. The player at the top of this page is the thing itself — BALIMORE, written, produced and mixed by Steven Ran Cohen, free and with no sign-up. If the explanation was useful, four minutes of the music will be more so.

Questions people actually ask

Why is techno in a minor key?

Because a minor chord can be held indefinitely without demanding resolution, and melodic techno's whole mechanism is withheld resolution. A major chord held the same way reads as a conclusion and the tension collapses.

What key is most melodic techno in?

A minor, F minor, D minor and G minor recur most, largely because their root notes land where sub-bass reproduces well — 55 to 110 Hz for A, for example.

What is harmonic mixing?

Choosing records whose keys are compatible so sustained chords do not clash. In practice: move one step around the circle of fifths, or to the relative major or minor, and no further.

Does key matter in hard techno?

Much less. Peak-time and hard techno have little sustained harmonic content, so there is little to clash; in melodic techno almost everything is sustained harmony.
