They are not the same kind of word

“EDM” is not a genre, it is a category that the American music industry adopted around 2010 to sell electronic music to a mainstream audience that had no vocabulary for it. Technically it means all electronic dance music, techno included. In practice, when an American says EDM they usually mean the festival main-stage sound of that era — big-room house, progressive, dubstep, electro — and not techno.

So the honest answer is: techno is a genre; EDM is a shelf. Techno sits on that shelf and also predates it by about twenty-five years.

What you can actually hear

Vocals. Main-stage EDM is built around a sung hook with words you are meant to remember. Techno either has no voice or treats one as texture. This is the fastest test there is.

Song form. EDM uses verse–build–drop, with the drop every 32 bars and the whole record done in three minutes. Techno uses a continuous arrangement of six to ten minutes that may never resolve to a chorus.

Harmony. EDM resolves in a major key and is designed to feel triumphant. Techno is minor and often declines to resolve at all.

Where the energy comes from. EDM adds — more layers, more level, a bigger drop. Techno mostly subtracts, and gets its power from space and repetition.

Why the distinction matters if you are searching

Searching “EDM” gets you the 2012 festival canon and whatever is being marketed this month. Searching a tempo and a genre — melodic techno 124 bpm, peak time techno 140 bpm — gets you the lane. The umbrella term is the one thing guaranteed not to narrow your results.

And house, while we are here

House is the third word in this argument. House swings and borrows from soul and gospel; techno is straight and borrows from machines. Both sit under EDM on an American shelf and neither thinks of itself that way.

Questions people actually ask

Is techno the same as EDM?

No. EDM is an umbrella term the American industry adopted around 2010 for electronic dance music as a whole; techno is a specific genre within it that predates the term by roughly twenty-five years. In everyday American usage 'EDM' usually means the festival main-stage sound rather than techno.

What is the difference between techno and EDM?

Main-stage EDM is built on a sung hook, verse-build-drop form, major-key resolution and three-minute length. Techno has no sung hook or treats voices as texture, runs six to ten minutes as a continuous arrangement, stays in a minor key and gets its power from space and repetition rather than from adding layers.

Is house music EDM?

Under the umbrella definition, yes. House swings and draws on soul and gospel; techno is straight and machine-derived. Both fall under EDM as Americans use the term.

What BPM is EDM compared with techno?

Main-stage EDM typically runs 128 to 150 BPM depending on the sub-style; techno runs roughly 125 to 150, with melodic techno at 120 to 132 and peak-time at 138 to 142.
